VHC Medical Brigade

Message from the Director

Welcome to the Virginia Hospital Center Medical Brigade website! You’ll read more about our mission activities elsewhere on the site, but I want to not only welcome you, but also brag a little bit about the phenomenal group of supporters and volunteers who make up the Medical Brigade team.

Our focus is Honduras, one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Our single healthcare trip in 1999 has now expanded to a year-round operation covering several high impact programs. We make 6-7 trips each year in addition to the one-week mission in the autumn; this latter trip now includes over 80 medical professionals, providing over 7,000 patient services. All these efforts combine to have a positive impact on the health and quality of life for the underserved in Honduras. That ability continues to grow, thanks to the people who donate their time, money and exceptional skills to this effort. I’m continually amazed at their dedication, and I hope you will join us in our efforts to increase available healthcare to the poorest of the poor.

Read more about how we

  • Work with isolated villages to bring clean potable water and sanitation to their homes
  • Train, supervise and supply health workers in remote villages to provide basic medical care year-round to their communities
  • Provide much-needed medical equipment and supplies to two hospitals who serve the poorest of the poor
  • Help hearing-impaired children with donated hearing aids
  • Support the sole physical therapy rehabilitation center in the Comayagua area
  • Provide material and healthcare support to two orphanages
  • Donate medical supplies to four other medical/dental missions annually
  • Create local Health Committees in remote mountain villages to supervise public health, water and sanitation initiatives
  • Provide over 7,000 medical services annually to adult and pediatric patients, including fitting over 3,000 pairs of eyeglasses

As you can tell, we provide a wide range of services to the people of Honduras, and their needs are great. Whether you are a surgeon or simply have a pair of crutches to donate, your support is critical to improving the lives of those less fortunate than we.
